Lots Of Tutoring
I’m the grader/tutor for a programming course at my university and I had more students come see me today than I had students come see me during the whole last semester. About 9 students came to see me and all I could think of was: “Holy cow, how am I going to manage this?”
So I helped each student out as much as I could. In the end, there were only 3 students left. I was helping one of the students, let’s call him Bob. After Bob finished his project, he started the following conversation:
Bob: Are you from around here?
Me: No.
Bob: Where you from?
Me: I’m from Haiti.
Bob: Really? Do you go to church?
Me: No, not really.
Bob: Have you heard about the bestselling book?
Me: Yes, the Bible. (People like Bob are very predictable)
Bob: Good good, so you know about it. Have you read it?
Me: Nope.
Bob: No? You should read it, at least a little bit every day. Here’s a small book for you to read.
Me: OK, thank you.
[Me pauses]
Me: You can keep it if you want.
Bob: No, you can have it, I have plenty of them.
I’m not a very religious person at all. But it’s not the first time people approach me trying to “save” me or something. I don’t see a problem with people being deeply religious, but I don’t like it when they try convincing me of being more religious. I don’t walk up to them trying to convince them not to be religious. And I particularly didn’t like this situation, since it was at school in a class room.
This has happened to me also and let me tell you I was paralized. I never know how to get myself out of the situation without being rude. I have a collection of bibles at home; gifts for the very many who tried to save my precious little soul.
By the way which school did you go to in Haiti? (your name looks familiar)
I went to St. Therese de l’Enfant Jesus, then to LycĂ©e Francais.
